I’ve been on a ten-year journey to find the perfect spot to hunker down and live through the ongoing collapse. Regardless of your political affiliation, we can all feel things shifting in our world: climate, economy, political unrest. Almost every aspect of our lives is different — harder, I’d argue — now than it was five or ten years ago.
No place is perfect, but if you follow these steps, you’ll find a good spot for you and your family.
Step One: Focus on your lifestyle. How do you want to live?
How you want to live during an ongoing collapse is the most important aspect of this journey for you to figure out. Once you know the “how” it’ll make the where an easier decision.
In this move, we focused on self-sufficiency in terms of being off-grid. We don’t want to be 100% off-grid all the time, but can we live comfortably if the power goes out for an extended period of time? Can we heat our house when the electricity is out? Yes. We have a wood stove. Can we get clean drinking water when the electricity is out for extended periods of time? Yes. We have a gravity-fed well, and a year-round creek. Yes. We have filtration. These questions helped us figure out which property to purchase when we were looking.
We are fine with heat and water being pretty primitive. If you’re older, or not as able-bodied, you may want a backup generator, solar power (something we’re considering in the future), or a hand pump on your well if it’s not gravity-fed.
Another concern, beyond heat and water, is food. While we’re too late to start a garden this year, we plan to start as early as we can next year. In addition to our garden, we moved to a place with plenty of wildlife and wild-growing vegetation around us. Plenty of streams and lakes with fish, and plenty of wild-growing flora and fauna that we can nosh on in times of need. I’m not banking on the fact that we can hunt our way out of this, I believe that’s a naive…
